The following tables give information on chemical resistance of polypropylene, the so called Environmental Stress Cracking Resistance (ESCR).
The factor evaluated is the resistance to chemical attack during exposure to particular media at 20°C and 60°C.
Several factors affect the actual ESCR, such as:

  • Temperature
  • Concentration
  • Contact time between polypropylene and the medium
  • Presence of internal stress
  • Wall/film thickness

Legend

+ Good      The medium has no effect
o Doubtful      Application of PP as packaging material could have limitations regarding resistance to chemical attack by the packed content
  Unsuitable      Is not recommended to expose PP to this medium
Sol.      Aqueous solution at a concentration higher than 10%, but not saturated
Sat.Sol.      Saturated aqueous solution, prepared at 20°C
  Work.Sol.      Working solution of the concentration usually used in the industry concerned
Tg-s      Technical grade, solid
Tg-l      Technical grade, liquid
Tg-g      Technical grade, gas
